Choices for Rail Fence QAL - the wrong choice!

Well I had worked out three possible scenarios for
fabrics for the first Rail Fence and decided to use some
of my Tropical fabrics which I felt would look good with
co-ordinating solids - I don't normally use solids - and wished I hadn't!!
I should have taken more note of the comment
from
Linda at Koka Quilts

anyway here are the first - and - last three blocks using the solids

individually I don't mind them and especially love the lime green one
but I just plain do not like them together (below), however with a border around each one they will make quite nice cushions for chairs on the deck in Summer!

so  back to decisions on the other fabrics on my table, and begin again.
A new addition in the mail yesterday

now these I like!! They would look good with more fabrics just seen on a site,
perhaps they could creep into the new Rail Fence - hopefully next week.

  1. I have to disagree with you. I think these three blocks are smashing and I think they are great together. If you're going over the top, keep going!

    2. Thank you Millie! Perhaps my problem is that I usually work with fabrics such as KF, very bright and a multitude of colour - but as these rail fence blocks are q dream to cut and sew perhaps it will be good for me to persevere and cut the fabrics already paired for this project.

    3. Yes, please keep going. Also, two things: 1. when you post here, can you make your pictures bigger? 2.Check out my quilt, Lightning in the Night Sky. It was posted on May 11 2015 on this blog. Sometimes rotating your blocks can make things VERY interesting. Your fabric selections have GREAT potential. Keep going, please.

  2. Often times we judge our quilts too soon! Consider sleeping on it for a while. Imagine the quilting lines and patterns that will add textures to the finished quilt. I love your colors, the contrast of large prints and solids are creating a harmony of calm and happening in a pretty cool way! I agree, keep going unless you are very very very stuck!

    1. You mention the quilting and texture which would be added - I had considered this and then dismissed the thought - but my original intention was to use a perle cotton for quilting using a few different colours. I am looking at the three blocks together on my wall as I write and as I said to Millie above perhaps I should keep going! Yes, I will keep going, not good to just give in!

  3. Well done for carrying on :-)
It is sometimes quite difficult to imagine what it will all look like put together, but I too think that your blocks look great with plain fabrics; specially if you plan to quilt with a pearl cotton, which will show up better on a plain fabric.

  5. So interesting reading all these comments. I too agree, keep going Maureen! I think choosing the darker solids is working well here (as opposed to the light pink I tried!). I love all your combinations, the effect is bold & graphic, and quite different to what I've seen so far!

    1. p.s. I meant to also suggest maybe you could pair up a few tone-on-tone sort of fabrics - ones that read as a solid - with a few of your prints too? It's all fun & experimental!

    2. More combinations by the sewing machine now and so pleased I had the encouragement from all to carry on!

  8. I'm late to the party - your blocks are wonderful (although I am another not-solid person). Your combinations are wonderful and a whole top with this kind of approach with quilting will be fabulous.

    1. Thank you, after writing that I wasn't at all happy with this project and then having comments encouraging me to carry on I decided not to be a wuss and take the words offered on board - can you believe I am now loving it!!!
