I decided to try a couple of practice blocks and reached into my scraps box for the larger cuts. There was not a lot of choice regarding color so I went with what I had, even piecing some of the scraps to make a big enough square. My two practice blocks are the ones on the right in the medallion below.
I thought they were so cute that I made the two on the left from stash. As you can see I am in the process of putting on scrappy borders. The HSTs are leftovers from another quilt.
I will call this finished when I complete the outer border which you can see at top right.
There was never a plan to make a girly baby quilt. See what can happen when you are having fun?!
These are my practice blocks and real blocks in some of the colors I will be using.
They are not yet arranged or sewn together.
As you can see I decided to go with the "Winter" design.
Both of these are wonderful ... I have a Winter project waiting, too.
ReplyDeleteI second Julie both are beautiful - isn't it amazing what we can create with our practice pieces? Your Winter colours of the lovely blues with the subtle grey go together so well. I too have been pulling fabrics for this pattern but mine is ready for Spring!
ReplyDeleteI also thought that this design would be wonderful in greens but didn't have enough variety in my stash.
DeleteLooking forward to seeing what you do!
Two beautiful Windmills in the making! How delightful.
ReplyDeleteMargaret,
ReplyDeleteThis entire book was started with few experimental blocks. Isn't it amazing what our curiosity does? Both your windmills are beautify. I am curious to know how big the winter version turns out to be. Love your fabrics in there too.
I haven't decided on the size yet. My blocks are smaller than yours: 5.5 square
DeleteVery nice. I have been making a lot of free pieced wonky birds and the triangles with the stripe beneath look a little like birdies parading around your quilt!
ReplyDeleteOh it IS super cute, great idea to make two!
ReplyDeleteLove the serendipity of your practice blocks. I'm always thrilled when that happens. Sally
ReplyDeletevery nice...my idea of great fun...
