Never Too Miuch of a Good Thing

I love Sujata's take on the Rail Fence.  I've made it four times. Here's the most recent, a bright quilt for a friend who's undergoing treatment for leukemia. She loves bright colors, and we wanted something to bring a smile to her face.

Very bright bright with black-and-white.

When you go over the top, you should just keep going.

I just love these blocks.

Here's the finished flimsy.  The blocks are 16" square, so this quilt will be 42" x 64", a generous lap quilt to keep our friend warm while undergoing chemotherapy.

I kept all the leftover trimmings when I cut the blocks apart, and resewed them into a long, fun strip.

I added our friend's name to the back, and had a lot more fun with fabrics from my stash. It was a quilt made in a week, and it's away being quilted for a quick turnaround. I sure do hope this young lady beats cancer and can enjoy this quilt for a very long time.

Batik Rail Fence- searching for placement

    All the blocks for the Rail Fence were sewn. I used 6" WOF because I had a small pack of them and added to them. I have one extra block. Now I have to decide the positioning. Finished block size is 19". The whole quilt would be 72 x 72 which is a bit big for a comfort lap quilt? I tried a 3 block by 4 block layout, but the scale of the zig zag seems too big to only go three repeats. This is when it would be helpful to have some one else in the room for feedback. Grandma's Garden

I began this quilt in May when Sujata came to Ithaca, New York, for a two day workshop. The inspiration was a one yard panel of sunflowers and lilies that reminded me of my mother's watercolor paintings. Once I began cutting and sewing, the lattice design reminded me of the chain link fence that surrounded my grandmother's South Buffalo flower garden; hence the name Grandma's Garden. I followed Sujata's example and hand quilted with perle cotton because I love the tactile nature of Sujata's hand quilting. I had planned to tie it as well, but decided it didn't need it.

This quilt now adornes the wall in my kitchen which has been bare since we moved in 12 years ago. Although I hadn't planned it, it really was made for this spot. I had tons of fun making this quilt and I am thrilled every time I look at. Thank you Sujata for teaching me that it is ok to "color outside the lines" when it comes to quilting.

I am exploring some variations of the "Toran" design.
This is 32" square, batik.
I plan to machine quilt, no border.

Not the layout I had planned on.  It was fun to try different block arrangements.  Thus the name.
